Precision Screwdrivers and Bit Sets for Phones, Laptops and Consoles
The screw types you'll meet inside phones, laptops and game consoles (Pentalobe, Tri-point, Torx, JIS), which bits you need, and how to choose a precision driver kit.

Modern electronics are held together with tiny screws, many in unusual shapes designed to discourage opening. Using the wrong or poor-quality driver strips these screws in seconds, turning a simple repair into a nightmare. A good precision bit set is the single most important tool for electronics repair.
Quick answer
- Buy a precision bit kit with a quality handle and hardened steel bits (S2 or similar), 4 mm hex shank.
- Must-have bits: Phillips PH000–PH1, JIS 000–1, Torx T2–T10 and security Torx, Pentalobe P2 and P5, Tri-point Y000–Y1, small flat and hex.
- Keep screws organised with a magnetic mat or tray.
Common screw types in electronics
| Screw | Where you find it | Common sizes |
|---|---|---|
| Phillips | Laptops, consoles, toys, general electronics | PH000, PH00, PH0, PH1 |
| JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) | Japanese cameras, consoles, some laptops | JIS 000–1 (looks like Phillips; often marked with a dot) |
| Torx / Torx Security (with pin) | Laptops, hard drives, consoles, appliances | T3–T10, TR8, TR9, TR10 |
| Pentalobe | Apple iPhones, MacBooks | P2 (iPhone), P5 (MacBook) |
| Tri-point (Y-type) | iPhones (internal), Nintendo devices, Apple Watch | Y000, Y00, Y0, Y1 |
| Hex (Allen) | Tablets, drones, cameras | 0.7–3 mm |
| Flat (slotted) | Old electronics, terminals | 1.0–3.0 mm |
| Standoff / nut drivers | Motherboard standoffs, phone logic boards | 2.5–5 mm |
What makes a good precision kit
- Bit quality: precise tips made from hardened steel (S2 or better). Cheap bits deform and strip screws.
- Handle: a free-spinning cap at the top for your fingertip, a knurled grip and a strong magnetic bit holder.
- Extension shaft: flexible or rigid for deep screws.
- Organised case with size labels.
- Electric precision screwdriver (optional): speeds up repetitive work but must have low torque settings.
Organising screws
Phones and laptops often use screws of different lengths in different holes. Putting a long screw in the wrong hole can pierce a board or display (sometimes called "long screw damage").
- Use a magnetic project mat you can write on, or a tray with compartments.
- Take photos at each step.
- Place screws in the same layout as they came out, or tape them to a printed diagram.
Technique to avoid stripping screws
- Choose the exact bit type and size. PH0 in a JIS screw often cams out.
- Hold the driver vertical, press down firmly and turn slowly.
- If it slips, stop; try the next size up or a JIS bit.
- For a stripped screw, try a rubber band between bit and screw, or a screw extractor set for small screws.
- Do not overtighten when reassembling; small screws into plastic or thin threads strip easily.
Frequently asked questions
What screwdriver do I need to open an iPhone?
A Pentalobe P2 for the external bottom screws, then Tri-point Y000 and Phillips PH000 (and sometimes standoff drivers) inside, depending on model.
What is the difference between JIS and Phillips?
JIS screws have a slightly different cross profile designed not to cam out. A JIS driver fits Phillips screws well, but a Phillips driver can damage JIS screws.
