Cordless batteries only fit tools from the same platform, with a few useful exceptions such as multi-brand alliances and dual-voltage packs. Use the checker to see whether a battery works in a tool, or browse the full chart below. Always confirm with the manufacturer's current compatibility list before buying, as ranges and rules change.

Key rules to remember

  • 18V and "20V MAX" are the same class: five lithium-ion cells in series. The label differs by region and marketing, not by power.
  • Same parent company does not mean same battery. Black+Decker, Craftsman and DeWalt batteries are not interchangeable; neither are Ryobi and Milwaukee.
  • Dual-voltage packs: DeWalt FLEXVOLT batteries work in DeWalt 20V MAX/18V XR tools and 60V MAX/54V tools; HiKOKI/Metabo HPT MultiVolt batteries work in 36V and 18V tools.
  • Twin-battery tools: some 36V tools (Makita, Einhell, WORX) use two 18V/20V batteries at once.
  • Alliances: Metabo-led CAS, Bosch Professional-based AMPShare and Bosch green-based Power for All let one battery run tools from several brands.
  • Adapters between brands exist but may bypass safety electronics and void warranties. See buying used and third-party batteries.
